Atlanta is located in north-central Georgia, atop a ridge south of the Chattahoochee River. In fact, Atlanta has the highest average elevation of any major city east of Denver. Boasting a population of 520,070 (as of 2024), Atlanta is Georgia's most populous city and the 36th-largest city in the United States. Atlanta sits primarily in Fulton County, where it serves as the county seat. However, a small portion of Atlanta also extends into neighboring DeKalb County.
