Marietta is located in the northwestern part of Georgia and is a principle city of the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta metropolitan statistical area. Boasting a population of 58,478 (as of 2000), Marietta is Georgia's tenth most populous city. The city was named for Mary Cobb, the wife of U.S. Senator and U.S. Supreme Court Judge Thomas Willis Cobb. Incidentally, Marietta sits in Cobb County and serves as the county seat.
